Floating Sheep’s map charting hate tweets, which allows you to search on several flavors of hate, is a creative use of data and mapping to raise awareness.

————————————————————————————
Our entrance into the Social Media Age means that we can now “map” something as seemingly intangible as “homophobic attitudes.” True, it’s always possible to do a questionnaire or a survey, or to compile statistics about homophobic hate crimes,  but it would take a lot more work for such a study to have as much scope as this project does.  The interesting thing about this approach is it overturns our usual notions of (a) the Internet providing a sense of cover for our “real” identities (since we can always have multiple accounts or use usernames or profiles that don’t really represent who we are) and (b) the Internet as lacking a sense of physical geography.  I would be curious to see if there’s any geographical relevance to “hate tweets” overall.
